“Lamping”

March 11th, 2008 · 2 Comments · News

The activity of “lamping”, hunting and vermin control of land game with a rifle, a strong lamp and occasionally a dog to flush the game out. The light causes the rabbit to freeze which allows the hunter to take a clean shot.

This activity has been observed on regular occasions in Kirby’s surrounding fields. I understand the need for pest control and the standing of the R.S.P.C.A is that it is more humane than Myxomatosis which caused the animals much suffering when it was artificially introduced to control the increasing rabbit population.

Lamping is legal as long as it is carried out with a rifle and done so with the permission of the landowner, also that dogs are used for the purpose of flushing out and not used for the kill. As a matter of courtesy the police should be informed and a firearms certificate is held.

My fear is that this is not the case, when the lampers are spotted the lamps are turned off and leave is soon taken. My question is this, is it done for pest control, food or simply the thrill of the hunt?

Anyone who sees killing animals as a sport is basically a thug and excuses that it is ‘vermin control , conservation ‘ and so on is just a sad joke. That’s my opinion and the sooner the human race rids itself of these practises we can then class ourselves as the superior species . But at present with lamping scum in our society we’ll always be unworthy as being classed as ‘behaving like animals ‘ – we behave much worse.

Im pleased you spoke up and that i’m not alone in feeling the same way. which is why i reported it to the police, for what it was worth. Strange thing is i thought these emotions were more of a female thing, thank you Bob.
