Reading an article in a local magazine i recalled a history snippet. I’m sure that a member from the local history group can either correct me or perhaps expand.
When harvest time was upon the village the local school children would refrain from their education to help the village harvest the fields.
I must be getting old because to me that sounds like community, when everyone pulled together for the benefit of the village. At that time the villagers were voted for village positions such as the policeman, although this position was not fought for as there were many charges for the resposibility, (see history of the village). One point though was that at the end of the year he would collect the taxes for his costs…….old time council tax i suppose.
Could you imagine if it were the same now, who would do what?
