On 22nd and 23rd October respectively, the Leicestershire Constabulary and the Leicester Mercury issued news of the arrest of two people in connection to the burglary of a store on Main Street on the 15th. The robbery that took place In the early hours involved the theft of two containers of cigarettes. Within hours a 47 year old man and a youth of 15 were apprehended in connection, later bailed pending further enquiries.

Less than two weeks later a second robbery has occurred on Main Street forcing the temporary closure of “One Stop”.

What do we have to do stop people believing that it is acceptable to take what they have neither earned or worked for? Its maddening. We need the moat round Kirby and not just the castle. Alternatively a judicial system that works, that bring back consequences.

Back in 1990 there was no Junction 21a and to get to Glenfield was under this bridge and along what a fairly narrow lane. But after 21a was opened there was no traffic through the bridge and some travellers moved in. They were there for some time. Walking a dog through there became difficult if attempted, walking or cycling was avoided. They lit fires and were the inevitable nuisance. After they had been moved the Coucil acted to stop this happening again.

The verge was raised along with the gates and though they remain solid the verge has been flattened over time. It is a lot less imposing that it was. Overall it’s not pretty but it works. Cars cannot get through but horses, moped drivers and everyone else can. Then in the last couple of years youths would start congregating near that gate during the evening. There would be 2 or 3 cars, girls, drinking, smoking cannabis, condoms and all manner of litter down there in the mornings. Note that not all youths down there are causing problems – far from it. There are many in the village who will play football under there and congregate there without problem – after all it’s dry, they can make noise and there are no windows to break. They are also polite and not intimidating.
But the problems with these others persisted despite the local beat officer intervening. Eventually the Council realised that maybe there might be a problem and the process of “doing something” started.

And we have a gate.
Or if you look at it from another angle, a minor inconvenience.

So should the travellers come looking again they will be deterred by the kerb. The gap there is so big and the verge flattened you could get a caravan or truck through without any problem. On the path from Kirby to Glenfield there are two gates on a path – the type used to slow cyclists down. A couple of months ago they were ripped out and the support posts hammered flat. We cannot assume they will not be back.

The gap to the side of the gate needs 2 or 3 concrete bollards as a minimum. That would secure the area and keep open what is an important route.

In the recent Council election: “In Glenfield Lane and Vicarage Close David [Parsons] is committed to the scheme to stop traffic using the road beyond the Glenfield Lane / Viacarge Close junction towards the motorway bridge in order to cur down anti-social behaviour” Scheme? It’s a gate, just a gate. Maybe a scheme would have included bollards…

Just days into 2009 and the burglaries are off to a fine start.

Only two days ago my neighbour was burgled around tea time, hardly even dark. One problem is that alarms go off so regularly that little attention is paid to them, why is that? Would’nt we like to think that if it were our house somebody would take a look, of course we would.

Perhaps the blame lies with those owners whom let their alarms run for so long and so often when nothing but a fault has occured, as then we become complacent.

To follow this we today received a flyer from Leicestershire Constabulary….NO LIGHTS ON !! If we think no one is home, so will BURGLERS! As my daughter has poitned out, the offending thieves will have received this flyer too, and if they burgle homes at tea time under a street lamp then a light in a window does not really concern them at all.

Remember that they watch who does what and when!!

The Leiceatershire Constabulary online show statistics of recorded and detected crimes in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland. They are divided into eleven catergories and present the previous month and year to date compared to the same period last year.

The statistics for Kirby Muxloe are:-

Recorded offences – incidents reported to the police as a crime defined within the law. For this period 2007/08 the figure remains a level 14. This highlights that although reported crime has neither increased or decreased.

In this catergory the problem to me is that a reported incident can be anything from criminal damage to homicide, so where the figure remains level the severity of the incident is not highlighted.

Detected crimes – reported incidents where a suspect has been identified and made aware that they are responsible for the crime, For this period 2007/08 the figure has decreased from 7 to 0. This highlights that the number of people identified has decreased.

In this category it appears to me, (the cynic) that they just haven’t managed to catche anyone, after all there were 14 incidents reported!

This one just made me laugh, out loud and a lot…..

In broad daylight whilst i was out, and only briefly, somebody must have parked close to the house, come down the drive and stole, took or borrowed a broken microwave oven. Not just minimally i want a new one type of broken………..the d**n thing blew up leaving my kitchen smelling like an indoor firework party had been held. It had no turntable and had been in the rain for days until i could gather up the energy to take it to the tip.

Why? given that the weather had not been exactly tropical and that it was left near the dustbins, who would want it and why? Frankly they saved me petrol and effort and i should be thanking them, but never the less it was not theirs to take. What else could be taken in broad daylight?

Could you imagine the local police rolling on the floor laughing if i was to report a stolen broken microwave.

Well, we shall have to await the mercury no doubt to find out what that was all about, alternatively someone in Kirby must know so how about filling us all in.

So what’s next? we have had abandoned burnt out cars, knife threats, robbery of the building society and even a ram raided shop; what do you believe is happening or will happen?

Last night my husband notified the police when two men were acting suspiciously outside the house. One man was observed looking down our drive from the road, he approached the front door and looked in, he then walked down the drive just looking around around and we waited for him to knock. He didn’t knock, he returned up the drive to the road, at this point he noticed he was being watched and returned to a van parked on the road. He was joined by another drove a short distance, waited for 10-15 minutes and drove off.

We may have overacted to a situation that was genuinely mistaken but having been burgled 6 times in the past in Kirby, i think the over action was justified.

Did anyone else see or hear anything suspicious last night, or even been a victim of theft? let us know. This could be an invaluable use of the site.

Two people were arrested and later released on bail pending further inquiries in connection with a robbery in Kirby Muxloe. The incident took place at the Main Street branch of the Alliance & Leicester on Wednesday between midday and 1pm. A report in the Leicester Mercury stated that residents reacted with shock, “something like that happening round here”, “Kirby Muxloe is a sleepy quiet village”.

Frankly I’m not at all surprised, i think people in the village are too complacent and as such believe that this is a well-to-do area that is beyond being affected by any outside interference. It goes to show that nothing untoward is expected when two people can walk into a building society in broad daylight and rob it, probably on their lunch break! Village mickey takers suggest that a pensioner tried to withdraw an extra pound.

We may be relatively safe here, we are not afraid to walk the streets and as communities go we o look out for one another. But maybe, just maybe people don’t generally bother with us because we are sleepy, did i say sleepy? i meant boring, boring backward and dormant, its about time we got a poke.
